Lavarone Lake |
The Lavarone lake is fed by small springs from the surrounding mountain slopes, difficult to pinpoint.
The lake’s effluent is also invisible: the existence of deep Karst cavities underground forces the outgoing water to flow through mysterious subterranean gorges until it appears on the surface in the Haute Centa Valley, about km. away, to form the evocative Valimpach waterfall.
The lake is at the centre of the plateau’s tourist proposals.
Its shores and hotels were the meeting place for the Viennese aristocracy during the Belle Époque. Sigmund Freud, father of psychoanalysis, also chose this beautiful lake and the hotel Du Lac for long periods of rest and study.
The legend of Lake
The story goes that in the current location of the lake there was once a dense wood that belonged to two brothers. One day the two brothers had a terrible argument over the property of the wood; they argued so violently that God was disgusted and punished them both: overnight He made the wood disappear into the ground and filled the great cavity it left with water, thereby creating the lake we see today.
This legend originated due to the fact that the lake was in fact formed by natural filling of a large Karst dolina; the ground must have sunk very quickly if it is true that the bed of the lake contains fossil remains of what was in effect a fir tree forest
Bathing in the Lake
The bright beauty of the lake, its evocative natural surroundings and quiet were the backdrop to the holidays of the Viennese middle classes during the fascinating period of the Belle Époque.
